Sound Effects
Sound effects will play a pivotal role in establishing the atmosphere and tension of my film opening. These are all done in post-production to enhance the quality of the film. In my raw footage there is casual background noises that may be heard if someone is paying attention really closely. However, the noises are hard to hear and I need the visual narrative to be at a max. I thought for a long time and brainstormed what sounds I needed. I wanted to use a lot of sounds but I also wanted it to be realistic so too many unnatural sounds may take away from the film. To find these sounds, I will find high quality audio clips on YouTube and convert them into MP3 files, which allows me to easily import and organize them in Premiere Pro. I want to build a complex soundscape by overlaying non diegetic sounds as audio. The first noise that will pop up is convenience store sounds. This will be things like people talking or the scanning when someone checks out in the background. These sounds establish the environment and creates the safe feel of a public place. When brainstorming, I thought of including some type of pop song like a coming of age movie would have that would play until his phone beeps during a montage of him walking but it strayed too far from the genre. It could create confusion on what the genre is which could be good if I am trying to subvert expectations, but I want the tone and feel to all establish the dread of horror. I could still include some sort of song as an overlay but nothing with lyrics. During him walking, he is in his natural environment so sounds like leaves falling or air swoosh will play in the background. At the end when the killer slashes the mom I will see how loud when editing the slash is. I want it to have a strong affect on the audience so if need be I will add an axe hitting sound to make it louder. To finalize the tone of the opening, during the final title card I will layer haunting music over it. The sound I found sounds like a jingle sound with a metal like object hitting against each other. This directly connects with the main aspects of the key being a part of the narrative. I need the music to leave the viewer with a sense of dread as they stare into the black screen. These are the basic sound effects I am adding but I will be most likely end up adding a lot more to enhance the product.
